Chapter 13

OXFORD was simply beautiful, thought Sean, as he and Michael wandered through the narrow streets, peering up at the impressive spires. He had taken so many photos on his phone that he had run out of memory. Michael had stopped them outside an impressive hotel, gazing patiently at him until Sean suddenly exclaimed, “It’s the Randolph! That hotel that’s always in Inspector Morse!” Michael had chuckled, leaning forward and kissing him impulsively. Sean felt totally comfortable accepting such affection in the streets of the city, noticing other same-sex couples on their own tours. At one point, as they walked along the riverbank and Michael’s arm came around his waist to pull Sean to him, Sean felt his heart swell with love for his beautiful man.

“Where are you taking me, love?” he asked, as Michael headed further along the river.

Michael simply winked and said, “Wait and see, babe.” They walked on for another ten minutes or so until they came to a quiet spot overlooking the river, whereupon Michael opened the backpack that he had carried all morning to reveal… a checked tablecloth, two plastic plates, containers of food, two plastic goblets, and a bottle of white wine, wrapped in a flexible ice pack.

“Oh, love!” Sean’s exclamation was low but full of emotion. Michael proceeded to spread out the cloth, arranging their picnic lunch and opening the wine. “Hey, you even remembered the corkscrew!” Michael smirked. “When did you plan all this?”

“Mum helped me this morning while you were showering.” Sean’s cheeks flushed briefly, remembering Michael masturbating him that morning as they lay in bed, the house still quiet, Michael’s hand across his mouth. He knew how… enthusiastic Sean got when making love, and Sean didn’t want to let the whole house know what his lover was doing to him. “Do you approve?”

“Oh, Michael, it’s a lovely idea!” The two of them sat down on the cloth, sharing out the food onto the plates and pouring out two goblets of chilled wine, each taking a few sips. Michael stretched out on his back, the backpack under his head, and Sean lay at right angles to him, his head nestling on Michael’s flat stomach, looking up at the clear blue sky overhead, listening to the birds singing from the nearby trees and hedgerows. Sean sighed happily, closing his eyes.

“Another perfect day,” he said quietly. He felt Michael reach for his hand and squeeze it tightly. A perfect day indeed.
